This past Sunday the women’s tennis team played its first NE-10 match of the season against New Haven.
The team played at Gold’s Gym and started out winning all three doubles. At No. 1 doubles senior Caroline Tisdell teamed up with junior Rebecca Black to play a consistent match, which they won 8-3. On the second court, freshmen Jessica Geary and Margaret La Fleur dominated New Haven with an 8-1 win. Senior Liz Rhode and sophomore Maggie Reagan played smart doubles and sailed through their match with an 8-3 win.
The ‘Phins felt extremely confident going into their singles match as they were up 3-0 over New Haven. The women’s team only needed two more points to win the match but every player went out there determined to win.
At first singles, Tisdell recorded a win 6-0, 6-2 over her opponent. On court two, Black was fearless with her forehand and overpowered her opponent to win 6-1, 6-1. Rhode, at third singles, played long points and tired out her opponent to win in consecutive sets.
On the fourth court, Geary cruised through her match beating New Haven 6-2, 6-0. Next to Geary was her doubles partner La Fleur, who continued dominating during singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. On the sixth court, sophomore Kelly Falconer played a long match and came back to win in the third set tiebreaker.
The women’s tennis team was very excited about their 9-0 win over New Haven.
“As a team we played really well today. It felt good to go out there, play good tennis and come back with a win,” said Geary.
The ‘Phins plan to continue playing great tennis next weekend when they take on Assumption on Saturday, March 31, and Franklin Pierce on Sunday, April 1, each at 10 a.m. at Skytop.
