The Le Moyne women’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime this past Wednesday against conference rival St. Rose by a score of 68-65.
The Dolphins started strong as they built a solid lead in the first half. The Golden Knights finished the half by scoring the final eight points to shorten the deficit to six going into halftime.
Le Moyne opened the second half by scoring 11 of the first 17 points as they pushed the lead to double digits. The Golden Knights came right back with a run of their own as they gained a two-point lead.
For the remainder of the second half, the teams went back and forth, ultimately resulting in a tie at 58 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, the teams were still evenly matched until St. Rose pulled away with 48 seconds to go after hitting a baseline jumper to give them a four point lead, eventually leading to the three-point win.
“It was a heartbreaking loss as we put so much effort into executing our plays and limiting second chance shots for St. Rose,” senior center Emma Cronk said. “So losing by three points was a difficult score to accept, but we have definitely grown as a team and we know that we can compete with anyone in this league.”
Cronk posted a double-double by recording 21 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Morgan Rowland led the Dolphins in scoring by putting up 23 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Senior Katie Hart was the third Dolphin in double digits as she added 10 points to the effort.
The loss puts Le Moyne at 6-14 overall and 3-13 in Northeast-10 conference play.
“I would just like to thank everyone that came out to support us,” Cronk said. “Hopefully we gave everyone a great game to watch.”
The Dolphins will be back at home Saturday, Feb. 11, to take on conference opponent New Haven at 1 p.m.
